"When the soul contemplates in herself and by herself then she passes into another world, the region of purity, eternity, immortality and unchangeableness, which are her kindred, and with them she ever lives, when she is by herself and is not let or hindered; then she ceases from her erring ways, and being in communion with the unchanging, is unchanging. And this state of the soul is called wisdom” Plato Phaedo 79
Our journey in life keeps us busy and active in an ever changing world so we easily get lost! Hence the reference to “erring ways”.
However, Socrates offers us a way home – “to be in communion with the unchanging".
Through inner contemplation by the soul she establishes the connection with that other world of "purity, eternity, immortality, and unchangeableness".
Can we make this journey home every day or do we need to wait until journey's end?
As we listen to Socrates, in the Phaedo, do we hear a man who has just become wise on his death bed or one who is ever "a soul in communion with the unchanging"?
